Is it just me or am I the only one who finds it perfectly acceptable to wait five years in between books for a new in a series?

The first book series I ever followed came once a month with 150 page books. Judging from that, I should be able to expect a book of 4-600 pages to be presented at least twice a year.

Once a year is borderline to me. A five year gap is completely unacceptable. Then again my memory isn't that great, so I've all but forgotten a series still exists in five years unless someone reminds me. Much less what actually happened in the last book.

I've been waiting for the third part of the "Exiles" series by Melanie Rawn since 1997 and it doesn't look like it'll be out any time soon.

Five years ain't nuthin'!

Seriously though, I have no problem waiting for the next in the series, as long as the last one didn't end in a cliffhanger (I'm looking at you Stephen King). If the books are really any good, they'll still be good (maybe a little dated, but still good) when the series (finally) continues.

Because it would totally suck if he died and left the series unfinished.

That happened with Robert Jordan and his Wheel of Time books, but Brandon Sanderson very ably filled his shoes.=

Yeah. People seem to be rather impatient with books these days. I don't understand it. Books are part of a creative process and that process can be neither forced nor rushed. Unless you're content to read utter crap like "The Sword of Truth" series. With the exception of the first book (which is actually quite good), they are all the same thing, over and over and over and over and...
I forced myself to "finish" the series (8 or 9 books at the time) and died a little inside when I heard he wrote more.

It greatly saddens me that Brandon Sanderson was selected to complete that series. Those are books I will never read because I cannot get through that crap to save my life. I've tried twice. The first time I got half-way through the fourth book and the second time I managed to muscle through 'til about the halfway point of the sixth. I know many people read and enjoy them. Perhaps it's just me (thought I'm a huge fantasy fan) or perhaps I see over the top derivation where others don't.

Oh well. I'm looking forward to the continuation of Sanderson's "Reckoners" series as well as "The Stormlight Archives" though I know it'll be a while for that one.

It can go the other way too. While creativity shouldn't be rushed, you can't just take all the time you need either if you want people to actually buy your books. Very few people can make an entire living off of selling books, from what I've heard, but the publishers and customers will still expect your product in a timely manner. So unless you've had some terrible accident or some calamity, then you should be able to put out something in a reasonable timeframe.

Meh. I don't want something. Especially not something rushed to meet an arbitrary deadline. I want the best the author can do. That's why I'm content to wait. Besides, there's more fiction available than I'll ever be able to read. I'm sure I can find something in the mean time.

Yeah, it's all good. If you don't mind, that's fine. I just personally have a beef with a series that takes too long in my opinion. I guess it's all about efficiency, which is making high quality work in the shortest amount of time. if your masterpiece takes longer than most people's, then it's not very efficient. Even if it is higher quality than most other's work.

You go to a restaurant and order a burger. You can have a good burger in fifteen minutes, or a great burger in thirty. Depending on how hungry you are, you may or may not be fine with waiting longer for a better meal.
