RE: common speeling errors

It drives me up a tree when people get idioms wrong. (This counts for this thread since a bunch of the time it comes down to an issue of spelling online.)
My mom says "checker box" instead of "chockablock"
My sister says "For all intensive purposes," not "For all intents and purposes"
When people “I could care less” when they mean they couldn't care less.
When people try and "make ends meat" when they should be trying to "make ends meet."
When people say their interests have been "peeked" or "peaked" not "piqued."
It's "scot free" not "Scott Free."
It's "bated breath" not "baited breath"
It's "should have" not "should of" - though this one can conceivably be shortened to "should've" and sound like the latter, so...
Edward hires Vivian to be his "beck and call" girl in Pretty Woman, not his "beckon call" girl.
Saying something is a "mute point" when it's actually a "moot point" though there is something to be said for a "moo point."

It's "bated breath" not "baited breath"
OOOOOOOOh, good one. Now, is that an abbrv "abated"? I'll let someone else be the bearer of knowledge.
- if I ate a can of tuna in front of my cat, could I call my breath baited?

American spelling in general. It's colour not color and aluminium not aluminum.
Please don't get me started on "could care less"...

Laughed at "baited breath". I think my students can relate. When I catch them leaning away I know its time to pop another Altoid. I call it practicing safe breath.

That is a better rule, there. When it makes a hard e sound. Many fewer exceptions. Species, seize, caffeine, protein, codeine are a few. But that long e thing is helpful.
Proposed Change: "I before E except after C and when the IE/EI sound is a Long E."
Change Approved.

Ok let me make sure I have it straight for all the ESL students.
I before E except after C and usually only when the IE/EI sound is a Long E, except for species, seize, seizure, caffeine, protein, codeine, etc
That should be simple enough for everyone who wants to learn....hehe

Yeah, not sure what happened over there after our ancestors left. They've really let the language go to hell.

Suffered the same fate as their royals.....
See, we americans got out there and mingled with the other languages (while casting off U shaped anchors). That's why ours is so robust.........in comparison.
