Thanks for all the advice.
I didn't find the tutorial to be of more use than playing a regular game so I preferred the later, I'm getting used to it. What others civs can I use for starters b sides Rome? And when do I transition to a different era? Is it worth starting on the prehistoric time?
I set the victory condition to defeat because it's what I'm more used to

I always start in the ancient era, I've tried starting in later eras but then it's not the kinda game I like. I enjoy going through the different eras and watching my civ progress. As for what civ to use, honestly I don't think it makes that much difference. Maybe on higher difficulty levels if you want to strategise, but on the mid to lower settings I'd just go with whatever civ you fancy.

Not sure if you mean domination, but I always leave all the conditions on. This isn't a game like Total War or Age of Empires really, it's not all about pure domination (I mean, it can be if you really want to play that way, I just think you'd be missing out on the rest of the game. It also gives other civs more of a chance to win, which I think is a good thing). I like going for the different victory conditions as it can make your game play out in different ways.

I think it's cool they put the portuguese on the game, but I think I'll play with the Russians since according to several guides they are good for conquering and expansion

I understand, I'll just stick to domination for now since I don't know how to play the game, it's just a way to make it easier.

Yeah Russia's passive ability makes it real easy to amass a big army with iron-requirement units, since you get double I believe.

Russia is especially good when you're just starting to get iron, or when you're unlucky and only grab a few iron before someone else. It's really helpful with uranium, because it's kind of a rare resource to start with.
It bothers me that you don't get a description of the special units and abilities unless you start a new campaign as the civ. So you have to go through that loading screen before finding out if you like the special stuff or not.

I try to just do random everything and stick to it, forces me to learn! Though gotta say, getting stuck in the middle of a desert as Brazillians really sucks.

Lol. I would never do random. I pick something according to my civ's strengths, like using England only on island maps.

If I'm doing islands I go Venice, it's like an auto-win especially if I get the Commerce policies

I have vanilla version, so no Venice. Arabia is my big money civ, and it's more about deserts than water.

I didn't expect that it would take so much time to evolve my civilization, but that's actually a good thing because I like slow progress and enjoying the experience.
I'm playing a standard game as the Russians, the way to win is by conquering/defeat (I picked this to get used to battling on the game and to make it easier for my first time), I picked the map of Russia for geographical coherence, I made an alliance with Morocco, I'm not at war with anyone, currently I'm on the medieval age and I'm topping the overall statistics (yeah I'm playing on the easier difficulty). The game felt boring at first but as I played it it got more and more interesting, I'm looking forward to see more.
What social policies do you guys pick?
