Not well. It took about 9 months for things to settle after I started to edge out. My family are on good terms, awkward, but good terms. I am very lucky. My wife also has the same idea, just she is more agnostic.

I studied QM while in college, but that's it.
My PhD was more in the technological aspect, applied to the physics problem of measuring the plasma column position inside a tokamak. In the end, it's mostly programming.
