Quote:Senate Bill Would Hold Corporate Executives Criminally Accountable for Not Disclosing Lethal Product Defects
Quote:That is why on July 16, the Hide No Harm Act was introduced in the Senate. According to a news release issued by the legislation's co-author, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), the purpose of the bill is to:
Make it a crime for a corporate officer to knowingly conceal the fact that a corporate action or product poses a danger of death or serious physical injury to consumers and workers. The bill, which would create punishments of up to five years in prison and potential fines, would also create a safe harbor from criminal liability in cases where a corporate officer notifies a federal regulatory agency and individuals subject to the danger.

What? Isn't this supposed to be standard law? Here the EU has launched directives to protect consumers, they are in effect for all States.

"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

hmmm
So if it is known that a standard Lithium-ion battery has a chance (however slim) of catching fire... then it is banned from any device that can be close to a person in order to operate, like... say... mobile phones!

Our lobbyists are very effective, it's just that in our case the consumer lobby won, and with reason. If States do not implement directives trough legal measure they can be sanctioned. I'm a euro skeptical, but I reckon some advantages the EU has brought. There is a vast group of laws protecting consumers directly or indirectly against unworthy commerce and businesses.

Whereas in the US, our vast system of laws mainly serves to protect commerce and business from unworthy consumers.

I wouldn't call your system of laws vast because it's commonlaw based. The case of us having far many written laws and regulations could benefit the weaker side, but I'm not sure that's the direct cause. That's what you get with too much freedom of economy.
