I put this in the science forum because I want to suggest that: "Why are we here?" is a more religious or philosophical question, whereas "How are we here?" is a more scientific one.
I do not believe life, including human life, exists for an ultimate non-man-made purpose. So I think its more scientific to ask "How?" rather than "Why?"

Yep, we don't so much have purpose as we have potential. Our "purposes" are man-made and there is no "ultimate purpose" or "reason for life".

I had an argument like this recently where someone suggested that the how of the universe being here was not something science could explain, my response was that the "why" can often be the "how" (er ...or vice versa) so it looks like you & I are on much the same page

Yes, its called the intentional stance and its essential for at least human survival. The by-product of this can often be in seeing intentions behind things that don't actually have intentions.
So at least some people at least sometimes think the universe has an intention/intentions behind it, and some people I guess you could say call this "God" although they very probably have other reasons for believing in God, although perhaps those reasons are often different interpretations of the same thing.
And maybe all the Bible/Koran stuff, etc, etc, are just examples of people seeing intentions/meaning in things when there isn't any.
