So how did it happen? Were you dropped on your noggin as child, or did Uma Thurman slam your head repeatedly in a door while shouting, 'WHERE....IS....BILL??'

Boru

That was a joke, I don't female friends because:
1: We're very different (same reason why I don't have many male friends).
2: I went to an all-boy secondary school.
3: It's a Muslim country (I had female friends when I was a little innocent kid).

Many other guys have female friends. And I don't, I mean I'm the gay one.

I agree, homophobia by itself isn't a fear, but hate, we should try to find another word with an etymology that fits the anti-gay attitude. I've actually met a homophobe, a person who is irrationally afraid of gays, seriously, he said he couldn't control it, if he saw a gay parade he'd panic, but he didn't hate gays

To answer the thread, as someone pointed out it's in the bible, torah and Quran/sharia, b sides people probably started seeing homosexuality as unnatural from a very soon era since science wasn't good enough at the time to show us there's nothing wrong about being gay. This idea is promoted by anti-gay groups, they say being gay is a choice, that AIDS is a gay disease, that gay is a mental illness and can be cured with conversion therapy.

A curiosity - The Catholic church over the last years (I talk about the Catholic church because it's predominant where I live) hasn't pronounced itself about homosexuality being a choice or not, they simply say that while homosexual tendencies might be impossible to avoid (and thoughts, desires), good Christians who are gay should abstain from gay behaviour. In other words, if people are gay, they cannot avoid it, they are not sinning, as long as they don't have sex/relationships with anyone they'll go to heaven. This may seem extreme, but I'm sure some churches out there think you'll go to hell simply because you are gay, even if you avoid gay thoughts and conducts.
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you

Are you sure that's not Batman?
It looks uncannily like Christian Bale!

It also literally means 'fear of man', or 'fear of mankind'.

It was a bad neologism.
Being a Greek, I can tell you homo comes from "Omio" meaning the "same" ... so correct. Not sure about the homo sapien/erectus, etc, connection
No God, No fear.
Know God, Know fear.

Note that lesbians are never mentioned or condemned. Booya.

I was going to bring that up, too. Apparently, the ancient Hebrews also felt that girl-on-girl is hawt and dude-on-dude is icky. They just ramped it up a few notches with the executions, and whatnot.

On a more serious note, I can see this being tied into population growth and/or a simple means of control. Hell, it'd make sense if we found out that a neighboring tribe openly allowed homosexuality and they didn't want to associated with them. The Bible is not shy about talking about the tribal tendencies of the Hebrews and their god.
