This Is Getting Strange
There have been ebola outbreaks before, in the same shithole 3d world countries with the same shitty medical services but they have burned themselves out after inflicting a moderate number of deaths.

This thing now keeps getting worse.

Quote:Liberia braces for the worst as U.N. confirms increase in Ebola-related deaths

Quote:Monrovia (AFP) – Liberia is bracing for an upsurge in Ebola cases, following a grim World Health Organization assessment on Tuesday that the worst is yet to come in the fight against the killer virus.

After predicting an “exponential increase” in infections across West Africa, the WHO warned that Liberia, which has accounted for half of all fatalities, could initially only hope to slow the contagion, not stop it.

For a small donation, Pat Robertson will be glad to tell you what sin the Liberians committed to stoke the wrath of god against then for the Ebola. If Aids was for Gay sex, and earthquakes are for Voodoo, then Ebola must be for wearing mixed fabrics or cooking lamb in milk or something. I dunno, I wouldn't donate..

The shit hole countries were actually making progress in increasing social stability and enhancing the mobility of their people as part of improvement efficiency of economy, that would actually translate into added susceptibility to highly contagious and fatal diseases until health care and disease containment catches up.

They are probably caught in a trap where health care has not yet caught up to recent increase in social and population mobility.

They are moving in the opposite direction of where the Republicans want the US to go. They are making their people richer, hoping health care will eventually catch up. The republicans are making the people poorer, hoping the health care system will eventually collapse.

Fuck. This is what I was wondering about, Chuck.

Sadly, I see I am not the only one.

Quote:The first possibility is that the Ebola virus spreads from West Africa to megacities in other regions of the developing world. This outbreak is very different from the 19 that have occurred in Africa over the past 40 years. It is much easier to control Ebola infections in isolated villages. But there has been a 300 percent increase in Africa’s population over the last four decades, much of it in large city slums. What happens when an infected person yet to become ill travels by plane to Lagos, Nairobi, Kinshasa or Mogadishu — or even Karachi, Jakarta, Mexico City or Dhaka?

The second possibility is one that virologists are loath to discuss openly but are definitely considering in private: that an Ebola virus could mutate to become transmissible through the air. You can now get Ebola only through direct contact with bodily fluids. But viruses like Ebola are notoriously sloppy in replicating, meaning the virus entering one person may be genetically different from the virus entering the next. The current Ebola virus’s hyper-evolution is unprecedented; there has been more human-to-human transmission in the past four months than most likely occurred in the last 500 to 1,000 years. Each new infection represents trillions of throws of the genetic dice.

That ain't new. There's always a religious moron willing to attribute some kind of catastrophe to a group that he disapproves.
Kevin Swanson attributed hurricanes Sandy and Katrina to homosexuals. Who knows, maybe this time he is gonna blame this Ebola virus to the atheist and pagans.

I watched a Horizon science program on it last night. There is a drug that works but it takes time to make. They hope to have enough to treat twenty people by December....lets hope no sick person makes it on a plane to a travel hub.

The GF is really worried about this. From the looks of things she may be justified.

Quote:A top German virologist has caused shockwaves by asserting that it’s too late to halt the spread of Ebola in Sierra Leone and Liberia and that five million people will die, noting that efforts should now be focused on stopping the transmission of the virus to other countries.

Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit of the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg told Germany’s Deutsche Welle that hope is all but lost for the inhabitants of Sierra Leone and Liberia and that the virus will only “burn itself out” when it has infected the entire population and killed five million people.

“The right time to get this epidemic under control in these countries has been missed,” said Schmidt-Chanasit. “That time was May and June. “Now it is too late.”

The current Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed over 2200 people, with Liberia and Sierra Leone accounting for over 1700 of those fatalities.

While calling for “massive help” from the international community to prevent Ebola appearing in other countries like Nigeria and Senegal, Schmidt-Chanasit warns that getting a grip on the epidemic in Liberia and Sierra Leone is a departure from reality.

German aid organization Welthungerhilfe blasted Schmidt-Chanasit for his comments, with Sierra Leone based coordinator Jochen Moninger labeling his statements, “dangerous and moreover, not correct.” However, Moninger acknowledged that Schmidt-Chanasit’s assessment may be accurate in the case of Liberia.

The World Health Organization refused to comment on Schmidt-Chanasit’s remarks.

Although Ebola continues to rage in five African countries, media coverage of the epidemic has waned, despite evidence that the virus has mutated.

As we reported last month, former FDA official Scott Gottlieb, M.D. warned that if the virus was to hit the United States, the CDC would enact emergency procedures which could lead to healthy Americans who show no symptoms of the diseased being forcibly detained for an indefinite period of time.

Scientists in Canada and Canada’s Public Health Agency have both acknowledged that the virus has likely gone airborne at least to a limited degree, while the CDC has urged airline staff to take steps to prevent the airborne spread of the virus, including giving suspected Ebola victims surgical masks as well as directing staff to “not use compressed air, which might spread infectious material through the air.”
