Florida police lured innocent men into online sex stings and seized their property, records show

Police fought the requests by claiming the investigations remained open, but one agency claimed it had already destroyed records from one sting just one month after it was conducted.

Clearwater police seized 19 cars in January 2014, the station reported, when a joint sting with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35 men in one weekend.

The technical term is asset forfeiture, a suite of laws that allow police departments to seize money, guns, cars and other property used – or suspected to have been used – in crimes.


An LEX 18 Investigation has uncovered that a state law designed to give oversight of Kentucky asset forfeiture practices is mostly ignored by Kentucky police agencies, which are required to report their drug-related seizures every year under the Kentucky Controlled Substances Act.

According to an Office of Drug Policy report obtained by LEX 18 Investigates, only 63 of about 400 law enforcement agencies filed in Fiscal Year 2014, leaving potentially millions of dollars worth of goods and unaccounted for.
