The Necessity of Atheism

The Necessity of Atheism
Something I learned yesterday as I was waiting for a coach on Oxford's High Street. Just across the street from Queen's College, you'll find University College. Way back in the early 1800's it had a student that went by the name of Percy Bysshe Shelley.
In 1811, he published a pamphlet titled "The Necessity of Atheism".
It seems to have been missed by most around here (except leo-rcc)

Here it is:

In 1813, he published a second edition with a few extra bits, one I particularly liked was the inclusion of Lord Bacon's Moral Essays

Is it me, or are most of these arguments the same ones that we use nowadays?

I mean... yeah, we know a bit more about the world, we have Quantum Mechanics, Astrophysics, biology... but... it just seems we've pushed god even further than it was back then...

Ofcourse they are the same. The arguments for god haven't changed for centuries. So, it stands to reason that the counter-arguments haven't changed either.

Atheists speaking out keeps america from being a total theocracy. Maybe if they had spoken out more sooner, the christians wouldn't have broken down the church state separation wall.

Given that killing was the response to to people speaking out against christianity for so long, christians haven't needed to actually make arguments for very long. Now that they've been mostly dragged away from the "death to the infidel" mentality, now they're trying to make arguments for it.

Good video to watch, if you want to know how common the Jesus story really is.

Exactly.

An argument will gain favor among apologists and theists for a while, then it will be refuted by stronger arguments, fade into disuse, then be resurrected. Usually with some extra bits added on, as with Craig's version of the Cosmological Argument. Or Plantinga's Modal Ontological argument.

They are nothing more than professional turd polishers.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
