Go to Jail

RE: Go to Jail
It's generally considered a bad idea in the AA community if your higher power is a mortal. Your higher power should be larger than life.

As an interesting side note, I attended a sermon once in which the pastor was gleefully cheering the death of Christopher Hitchens and simply overjoyed that he was now burning in hell. This from a sermon at the Christian rehab I attended. I mean, I thought the guy was going to have an orgasm up there. And yes, there were many people court-ordered there.

As far as AA goes, however, I find it interesting that the higher power concept is far too soft for most hardcore Christians. Christians must maintain the belief that there is only one God, and that is the biblical one. All their answers come not from the big book of AA, but from the bible. I've seen countless arguments break out in AA meetings, throwing of chairs, and many storm outs over individual's concepts of higher powers.

Man, that's gotta be a great tool for recovery.

Sounds like a reason to bring popcorn.

I usually only go to the gay AA meetings (yes there is such a thing in many large cities), and haven't seen drama like noted above. Most gay meetings I've been to have subtler forms of the 'alpha drunks' asserting themselves.

The drama at the gay AA meetings is what is recounted by so many it seems, of dealing with their jobs, families and boyfriends.

Something I've found interesting and unexpected is that most of the meetings I've been to since the 80s about 1/3 of the attendees have at least 1 kid. My non-AA gay friends would have a rate of less than 1 in 10. Maybe kids really do drive people to drink ??

Nope... I do have a particularly abusive cat, though. Does that count?
