Dear Americans: What's the leading cause of death among the young?

You know simplemoss and cato, I don't think violence is a joking matter. Especially things like domestic violence.
For Religion & Health see:[/b][/size] Williams & Sternthal. (2007). Spirituality, religion and health: Evidence and research directions. Med. J. Aust., 186(10), S47-S50. -LINK

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke

There's a joke in there somewhere about two gangs going to a shoot out, but a hockey game breaks out instead.

I base that guess on the fact that of OECD nations I believe Japan has the lowest income inequality and as you can see above a very low homicide rate when compared with other developed countries.

Lower levels of health, welling, security and subjective happiness would also be contributing risk factors.

Thinking It's something to think about.

Poverty is definitely the biggest factor, and we have high concentrations of poverty in urban areas that are flush with guns and drugs all across the country. There are many other factors, however, that appear to be fueling the situation, like our gun culture, poor education, and the disenfranchisement of the inner-city youth. It's a complicated problem that needs to be addressed, but America doesn't seem to want to pay attention.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

If you think it's bad now, you should have been here in the eighties.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

By that logic Japan and the UK would have homicide rates through the roof!

Homicide rates per 100,000 per year:
USA: 4.7
Canada: 1.6
Japan: 0.3
UK: 1.0
NZ: 0.9
Australia: 1.1
China: 1.0
India: 3.5

It was humor, don't worry.

Paul Hogan concluded different and made a mint.

Dropping domestic violence into the discussion in an attempt to score cheap sensitivity points was a cunt move.

Of course unwelcome violence is a serious matter. That's why we have laws prohibiting it and incarcerate those that don't abide. Telling me I can't joke about violence is absurd when entire sports and entertainment industries are built on it.

Here's something else I find amusing. I would have thought that someone as hypersensitively concerned about this matter as you would be citing the significant reduction in violent crime rates over the last four decades. We certainly haven't attained perfection yet, but aren't some congratulations in order while we continue to improve?

Quote:Between 1993 and 2012, the violent crime rate (homicide, robbery, rape and aggravated assault) in the United States dropped by 48 percent. During the same period, the violent crime rate in New York City dropped by 71 percent.

Of course, talking about these very real facts would take the edge off your fucking crusade wouldn't it?

Indeed - the last time the nationwide homicide rate was lower than it is now, was the year JFK was assassinated (1963). We've been on a steady decline since peaking at 10.2/100K in 1980 (Source: FBI Uniform Crime Report)

We're improving. Yes, we can do more, particularly in terms of providing opportunity and support for at-risk individuals and communities.

Maybe its declining because so many crimes are committed by the cops and they don't report them as such?
