Please, by all means go ahead. Tell me how I'm misinterpreting the verse that says that apostasy is an offense punishable by death. You know, "slay them," and all that...

Such concept is wrong in its entirety. Islam does NOT allow killing of non Muslims the way terrorists do. Let me explain.
The Quran turns our attention to the high value of human life, whether it is Muslim or Non-Muslim and makes it absolutely forbidden to take an innocent life unjustly. The gravity of such a crime is equated, in the Quran, with the killing of all humanity.
“On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our apostles with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land.” ( 5:32 )
"Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for your faith, nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: For Allah loves those who are just" (60:8)
So terrorists and other such people are enemies not to others but to Muslims as well.
You might do better to tell your fellow muslims this, rather than us.

Of course you are right about that.
The question is, why is there not more resistance? We keep hearing that they are a minority. Well, minorities can be stopped.

Well what are you waiting for, then? Explain away!

Guys, guys, guys.... guys!!!
Islam is not the Qur'an.
The Qur'an is simply the book where all the teachings of the prophet are encased.... but Islam was built a bit later on... and it branched out, like all religions do, people can't agree with what's important... It's almost like the god itself doesn't matter.
So one branch of Islam is the one presented here by Khansins, the religion of peace and yatta, yatta, yatta.... another branch is the one espoused by the terrorists, another (with some overlap over the previous) is the jihadists and other thoroughly brainwashed muslim people.
Islam is a religion and, like all religions, it is made strong by the number of adherents. This number has nothing to do with the actual existence of the god they supposedly follow.... it has to do with how indoctrinated they are... and islam is a dangerous religion as it brainwashes people into thinking they are born muslim... as in believers in what the qur'an says... and only then become something else by contamination or whatever.
So.... were people born muslim prior to Muhammed? Was Nero born a muslim? Tarzan? Darth Vader?...

The fact that the verses are open to interpretation at all means that surely it's a contradiction to say one is interpreting them wrongly?

The fact that the verses are open to interpretation at all means that the writing was, if godly inspired, sloppy and, if ungodly, very well done.

Not all Muslims are terrorists.
But almost all terrorists are Muslims.

Bold statements should be supported by some data. This article quotes the Europol statistics:

And this one FBI data.

I'm getting a very strong whiff of "No True Scotsman" from the OP.
Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
