I agree that the capitalism behind sports is out of hand, but the entertainment value and health benefits of participating is not useless.

At one time, I had serious, legitimate plans to become a professional athlete (rugby), which plans were cancelled due to a rather severe injury.

I hardly think it fair to describe sport as 'wasteful'. Worldwide, million of jobs depend on the sporting industry, both directly and indirectly. It takes people to build and maintain stadiums, to produce and market the games and equipment, and so on.

You want to ban sport? Trust me - the money spent on sport would be eclipsed in a fast minute by the money spent on quelling the riots such a ban would cause.
