I'll keep the question short and sweet. Was John Lennon atheist or..? His song Imagine suggests it, and I can't find definitive answers. Anyone have an opinion they would like to share on the matter?

I'm not at all sure it matters, but I don't think Lennon would ever have considered himself 'atheist'. He came off as having a rather nebulous spirituality. If one has to stick a label on it, I think 'pantheist' would have described him best.

I am just studying up on him. Interesting guy.
He was certainly speaking against the evils of the religious establishments, and of a moral hierarchy that condemns individuals to hell for their natural feelings and actions.

John Lennon in a interview I saw years ago, said that when we die, its like going from one car to another. He didn't believe in a god as the Christians do but he believed their was something, I think Einstein sort of thought the same.

I'm not a huge john Lennon fan but I'm pretty sure he was raised Christian became sort of an anarchist, then started doing LSD and peyote and started practicing eastern religions like hinduism ( like mostpeople who do lsd tend too do) then became a Communist. I'm not sure if he became Communist (Maoist to be exact) before or after he met Yoko but lines like "imagine no possessions I wonder if you can" are Communist based lyrics
He believed in something like reincarnation. we die our memories of us are gone then poof were a baby again and live a new life all over again.
Atheism is a non-prophet organization join today.

I recall quite the controversy when the one of the Beatles exclaimed they were 'bigger' than Jesus Christ.
I'm thinking that would rule out most forms of Christianity . . . . |
