I completely agree with Bill here. Although I hardly think that's going out on a limb. I also agree with the Canadian lady (I didn't catch her name), that part of the blame is on the media and the nuance of political agendas.
Lets say you're a brick layer or a construction worker (it doesn't matter, just somebody who doesn't study politics or any field of hefty material), what chance does that person have in discerning facts when what they have to go on is usually going to be whittled down to misleading sound bites? Lets say a common person (like myself) gets a bug and wants to educate their self, so they go online and find a few papers. One paper is well written and for a particular issue. Another is well written and against that same issue. A third is well written and says both papers are lying. Our schmuck who has never studied the field he/she is reading about is left scratching their head. All the while, he/she is unaware of what's written between the lines- the agendas. The motives. Even if the person is clued in on all the agendas underlying the stances, which does he speak for or against? It's almost hopeless.
Another question that arises is: Is a person who is aware of both sides of an issue educated, even if the person has no idea which one is correct, and has been left on the fence?
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."

He wasn't even talking about that. I mean 45% of people can't name the three branches of government? That 1 minute of google and about 10 minutes on Wikipedia to give yourself a basic grasp of how the us system works.

But my conclusion is that the situation is hopeless.
There are smart sociopaths who will oppress the masses.
There are smart altruists who will try to lift the masses.
The first group will collect money and power among themselves more effectively because they are not as constrained as the second.
The second group would only be able to overcome the first if they could weld the masses into a cohesive capable tool and wield it against the sociopathic overlords.
The first group, being less conscientious and more duplicitous in how it wields power can and are welding the masses into a cohesive, capable tool to be used against the second.
The race is not always to the swift or the battle to the strong. Nice guys don't always finish last. But that's the way to place your bet.
Now I can't talk too much smack, cuz I'm one of 'em, but with the amount of entertainment avalable at your fingertips through the most technologically advanced phone you can buy (that you coincidentally dont really need), who's got the time to affect change?
People got too much Facebook, and Twitter, to spam, & texting to do, to start a revolution! Could be my pessimism, and complete lack of faith in humanity as a whole, but I think we're stuck with the system we got until it breaks!

We collectively fail to realize that we are biological systems first, social/political systems second and economic systems last.
Because we've got it backwards, there is no chance that we'll change our economics & politics before an ecological disaster crashes the systems. The arctic sea ice is well on its way out, storms appear to be gaining ferocity and our destruction of the diversity bank is on course to rival a medium asteroid hit. I understand, climate change is a hoax[/sarcasm]. We'll admit that there may be a problem more serious than jobs, jobs, jobs about the time that the clathrates let loose. We're screwed.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat?
