Garden of Eden was a setup...

RE: Garden of Eden was a setup...
A more relevant scene "put on the damn glasses".

Nada (Roddy Piper) tries to get Frank (Keith David) to put on some 'sunglasses' to see through the 'brainwashing'.

As a side note to this, the fight became real and the cameras kept rolling.

I've always read and interpreted the old testament from the perspective of the new testament. I must admit that when I read your comments, I can understand how you view God the way you do. I guess that Adam and Eve didn't believe God when he told them "Read my lips. Don't eat the fruit from that tree!" There's no doubt that he required people to tow the line. Although all the way through the old testament he was working out his plan to bring salvation to all mankind, a surface read will make him look like a power-hungry tyrant. Obviously, he did decide that he wanted us to live a life with suffering, although many of you say that life is great. The thing is, he made sure that Eden would be restored to us when it's all over. Go ahead and question his methods. I understand that atheists are good and wonderful people, who are good to people just because they want to. I'll admit I'm evil because sometimes I need a bit more than myself to love some people. I also get the desire to cheat and steal sometimes. I need the fear of God in me. The problem is that you guys ignore the message of the bible.

A book from the living god and almighty creator of the universe shouldn't be so easy to misinterpret. Yet even the people who believe that it really is the word of god cannot agree on what that message is. Strip away the presuppositions that Christians approach it with, and the 'message' disappears.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Not that the New Testament would be all happy go lucky, but the message to get from the Old Testament is brutal capital punishment for all kinds of things, waging wars and sometimes genocide. There's little love to be found in that book. And little to strive for either if you're halfway decent.

And I was told and told again, even by Jesus himself in the NT, that the Old Testament is the law and he hadn't come to change it. Which is hardly surprising, since the whole Jesus story wouldn't make any sense without the old book.

You apparently have not actually read the bible. It would seem that your only conversation with the bible is through the 'pretty' sunday school excerpts.

The problem is that there are a lot of messages of the bible, and you can find verses to justify anything that you already believe in. Hence the thousands of sects, and a history of violence and persecution, despite Jesus' attempts at a more positive message than that of the old testament.

We have to live how Jesus taught us to live. Jesus is the fulfillment of the old covenant and has paid the penalty for sin. It's him who we are to follow. That's the message of the bible. The old testament times were terrible times before the price for sin was paid and we came under God's grace.
