That's a logical fallasy!

You seem to be saying that you can just ignore fallacies and say the result "may" still be valid. So that's good enough. Good enough for you maybe, not to someone who cares about actual truth.

Sorry I am really confused as to your point. I get it, you don't like labels, that's your personal preference. They don't have to be used insultingly. If you take offence every time you see one, that's up to you. You can always ask for explanations, and if they are not forthcoming, you can ignore the person. Put them on block, they are a dick. There's plenty of ways to be a dick, that's just one.

But you seem to be making some point about it not mattering whether or not an argument contains fallacies. But then you tell me off for analysing this statement. I don't know what else I can say, so I'll leave it here. Nice discussing with you Smile

Redding herring again!

My point is people who do what I have done to you in the last three threads sound like douchebags over the internet.

You were just provoking me by talking nonsense, to prove your point?

I have no idea how that proves your point. Sure, acting like a dick is acting like a dick. Naming fallacies is a tool like any other and can be used well or badly. Blaming the tool seems pointless.

Either way, I think we're done now.

Random logical fallacy!

I bet I can keep this going. It's an overused tool that replaces real intellectual thought. If you look hard enough you can find logical fallacies in almost everything. You really were using a Red Herring in those posts. Does that mean they are less valuable than my mostly provocational nonsense that was free of them? Pointing out logical fallacies is douchey, overused and lazy.

If your objective was to demonstrate that users can be dicks, then...congrats?

I forgot another fallacy:

Loop fallacy- endlessly repeating your position until the other side puts you on block and you claim victory

I'll add that to the list.

It's not just that they can be dicks, it's that people who think they are so high minded use such a stupid 'argument' constantly. I know it's rather a futile process, but it would be nice to raise to the actual quality of debate and points. Also a good way to blow off steam about something that annoys me.

Logical fallacies are not always all that weak. The argument from evil is an argument from ignorance, but it's very strong none the less. Appeal to authority often is strong even if it's a fallacy.

Is there a logical fallacy where you edit every single one of your post endlessly?

I don't tend to reach for the fallacy identifier. I agree there are times when doing so seems brash or even an over reach. But there are many folks on these forums whose mention of them never rubs me the wrong way.

The fad I really hated was stating arguments in the form of a logical proof, assigning variables to premises and so on. Yuck.

Appeals to authority only work -if they do at all- when both parties accept the authority. When considering anything really interesting, I lose all respect for anyone who makes an appeal to authority. It is certainly ridiculous when theists here quote scripture. Can they possibly think anyone who doesn't already agree with them will be swayed?

I am indeed an anal perfectionist, and should really preview my posts more instead of keep re reading and editing them once posted.
