Because she developed a "philosophy" that was nothing more than a poorly constructed justification of her own selfish desires. She tried to intellectualize selfishness in order to legitimize her sociopathic lack of compassion, and in doing so, spread her viral mindset throughout the already corrupt and greedy business world.
In short, she was just a terrible human being.

I'm not familiar with her work, but isn't it simply misapplying Nietzscheism, and to that extent, the concept of the Greek hero, to capitalistic markets?

I'm not overly-familiar with her philosophy, either. I've just absorbed what other people have said about her works to get an impression.
But from what I've gathered, she attempts to show that the individual should never be held back, no matter what the cost. It seems she tries to say that if you have the skills and ability to accomplish something, how it affects others should not come into consideration. She advocates that the goals of the individual trump that of society.
Apparently, she was extremely affected by living under a socialist regime(Stalin?), and it's almost as if her reaction was to go to the extreme on the other end of the spectrum.

She left way before Stalin, but Lenin's first years haven't been a bundle of joy either.
From what I gather, she's as flexible as the bible when it comes to cherry picking her quotes. She's promoting reason and individuality, but also says outrageous things about fellow human beings. There's an appropriate quote for nearly everything in life, but what's most obvious is the fact that she considers every people not living under the same standards as the US savages. Like in the post I wrote on the previous page, where she outright denies native Americans their rights.
The larger problem lies in her followers, since they openly call for laissez faire capitalism without any regulations. And that means privatising social necessities like the police and the fire department too.
I'v also read the books of Terry Goodkind, who is an outspoken follower of Objectivism. On the outside these books are fantasy, but as he gets further into his series, they turn into objectivist manifestos with very questionable views.

Living in a socialist regime means living for the state. Every action should be evaluated as to how it affects the state, not the individual. She went the opposite direction and promoted that every action should evaluated as to how it affects the individual.

...meanwhile, here in the real world, on the continuum between society uber alles and individual uber alles, it appears that the best results for the most people lies somewhere in the middle. Where the fulcrum rests is debatable, of course.
IMO, there's room for both individualism (though not unrestrained) and altruism.

Very true - though the same can be said of any human economic or political system, when too much power is invested in individuals or bureaucracy, and left unchecked.

That's why you can cherry pick Ayn Rand. There's nothing against reason being your guide and taking a stance against irrationality. Buying the whole package though sings a very different tune.
