You're welcome to like those movies. I've said why I don't. Piss off.

RE: The Hobbit
I have read the Lord of the Ring books a few times (I really should reread it again for the sake of nostalgia), and I still enjoyed the films.

I have enjoyed The Hobbit films so far, but it does somewhat concern me that they expanded the films merely from a rather small book.

RE: The Hobbit
Honestly, there is a lot of events that happen in the Hobbit book, but because it is directed towards children it whizzes through them, unlike the elaborate detail Tolkien gave LotR. If this was going to be a short simple kids movie then it would still have to be a fairly long one. I believe the old cartoon is about an hour and a half long, and it still leaves out Beorn and a couple things. But I completely understand the people that have major issues with the latest ones, and can even relate to a few things even if I overall enjoy them.

Well, sadly, in the book, Gandalf's many disappearances were not explained any more than "who the fuck knows what motivates a wizard?"

The added material (e.g. investigating Dol Guldur) was based on existing canon AFIAK, but with the director/writer's own spin on it.

I just got back from seeing the film. I won't post spoilers, but there were a number of teary moments near the end for me, even though I have read the book many times and I knew full well that... well, not gonna post that spoiler.

Overall, I thought the adaptation of The Hobbit was less successful than LotR, in my subjective opinion. I still enjoyed watching the three films, though.

It is Peter Fucking Jackson who is in need of immolation.

Dude, is LOtR really such an important part of your world view that you are going to get stressed over it? It's a movie-- something to take the kids out on Saturday afternoon, eat a little popcorn and some Milk Duds. But you act like Jackson's interpretation of the book represents a personal ass-raping to you; is your world really so fragile that a Hollywood movie can ruin your day?

Let's face it. I know it, you know it, everyone here knows it. You're at that age where complaining is the most fun you can have. So if The Hobbit gives you a good target for your crotchety old-man rage, then feel free to vent-- but I know on the inside, you're happy as hell. Tongue

Largely I'm with Chas.

The mistake made was in the title. Titling it 'The Hobbit' was a venal bait and switch to milk three LOTR action blockbuster bags of profit out of a charming book. They should have called it Badasses of Middle Earth. The book was about Bilbo Baggins unlikely adventure, not 100000 CGI warriors hacking each other to bits.
I boycotted after the first movie. I might pick up Desolation or Seven Armies if they turn up on a discount shelf sometime but I won't give them full price, ever.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat? Huh
