I think I'm going to go ahead on it - so far after collecting up reviews, the people who hate it seem to be on the aesthetic/body end and also how difficult it is to get into the battery or perform maintenance. I don't give a shit about any of that - I just want the best "bang for my buck" as you say for gaming and photography.

I wouldn't say savvy - admitting I don't know or care much about maintenance and hardware isn't a savvy thing.
You could, of course, be completely sarcastic about it.

No I mean you're aware of the weaknesses ie battery maintenance difficulty and how to remedy that, plus that your sacrificing some build quality so just need to handle it with care.

It's not likely to leave my room, so I don't consider it too much of a weakness.

FWIW, the specs on that are almost identical to my XPS17 (boo, hiss, yeah, it's a Dell), with the exception that I don't have an SSD, and your my graphics card is marginally worse than what that Acer has.
Mine runs Skyrim (and everything else I've tried) at 1920x1080 just fine with all the eye candy turned on.

So you're saying I should do just fine, eh? I hope so, because I pulled the trigger.

A regular laptop will do just fine for gaming.
It is my free wifi that is the problem. I cannot afford to have my own net, cannot directly connect via ethernet, and as a result my game ping is usually pretty high.
