Maybe I’m spoiled because we have the largest community college in the state in my area. A college that works with local companies to develop programs designed to train the workforce we need in this area. Some of the technical two year programs offered include:
Aerospace-Fundamentals/Structures & Assembly/Welding
Automation/Robotics
Aviation (Airframe Maintenance) offered in partnership with the Alabama Aviation Center
Clinical Laboratory Technician
Design Drafting Technology
Emergency Medical Services (EMT, EMT-Advanced, Paramedic)
Industrial Maintenance
Machine Tool Technology (CNC & Manual)
Surgical Technology
These aren’t minimum wage jobs for high school drop outs. An aerospace welder, airframe maintenance technician or machinist working on a government contact around here starts at $20 an hour with zero experience. Twelve years of experience gets you to $60K annually. These jobs currently top out in the $75 to $80K range. Programs like these are well worth the $12,000 a two year degree costs.
