Most of us do. It's one of our most basic social instincts - submission to parent/leader. It would take hundreds of thousands years to make those instincts disappear and it's very likely that we couldn't form basic social groups - like families - without them. Just like if we bred dogs to be independent - it might prove impossible to continue the process, when the subjects became too disobedient and aggressive to coexist with us.
Sure, religion is not necessary (to say the least) for a civilized society to function and thrive. But we do still need the underlying psychological and social "mechanics".
