The Prince was an accomplished pianist he was also related to the Prussian Royal House and a general in Frederick Wilhelm's army.
In October, 1806 while commanding the Prussian Advance Guard near the town of Saalfeld he attempted to block the approach of Lannes' Vth Corps and Soult's IV Corps as they were coming out of the woods. The Prussians were overrun and Louis Ferdinand refused to surrender and was run through by a French Hussar. The Prince's deployment was so inept that Marshall Lannes needed to deploy only a single division to crush the Prussians. Given the later Prussian performance at Jena and Auerstadt it did not matter. Having one more bad general around would not have saved them.
But the music world lost a virtuoso.
