I would also go with Nr. 9, for its sheer grandeur, and how it leads up to Schillers poem, and last but not least the progressive spirit in which the lyrics were written. The double fugue... Yumm. followed by 5 and 7. All of them are great of course. I like the piano concerto 4, too. And then there are these mind boggling things like the Hammerklavier sonata, or the Grosse Fuge, which is 100 years ahead of its time... inexplicable.

You're missing out Min. There are many masters and master works in the 20th century.
Just gotta stretch those ears! Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Bartok, Copland, Scriabin for starters. Prokofiev's 2nd and 3rd piano concertos are awesome, especially if you are pianist. The 3rd is quite romantic even. I can't imagine a musical world without what 20th century composers have brought to the table. Of course, much of it is angry and dissonant. I like it as it befits my bitter atheist soul and atheist rage! The symphonies and string quarters of Shostakovitch! The piano works of Ives, Benjamin Lees! All of the Bartok piano concerti, the solo piano music, the string quartets, the orchestral works. So much... I like my pre-1900 music as much as any one, but there are many gems after that date as well. This is a fun piece from Rachmaninoff. I can't stand Stravinsky, Bartok and Copland. Scriabin I don't know....never cared enough to find out. Ravel and Debussy are sleep-inducing. The atonalists should be boiled in oil.
Rachmaninoff leaves me cold although Prokofiev is tolerable much of the time. There's another Russian composer, Alexander Glazounov who I generally enjoy and Shostakovitch's 7th Symphony is very good. I think the Party kept them in line and didn't let them get as decadent as the west. I have stopped going to the local symphony because they insist upon pairing something wonderful, like Beethoven's 7th, with some 21st century piece of shit like "Sonata for Chain Saw and Coffee Grinder," by Kutcherkockoff who was born in 1993. The only way I can vote is to stop going and telling them why when they call and ask why we did not renew our season tickets.
