(western) classical music discussion

My favourite Bach for Organ is the somewhat more laid back Passacaglia + Fugue

For some reason I haven't heard that one before. It's very soothing. Sleepy

The effect is probably caused by the steadily pacing (duh) ostinato in the bass that stays essentially the same througout the passacaglia.

Ok, so this is going to be the new boss of the best symphony orchestra in the world Smile

Looks extremely promising, says I as a huge Rattle fan. Brilliant, energetic and yet utterly humble at the same time.

I am not generally a big fan of Chopin, but watching her hands alone is already impressive enough. Is she even touching the keys?
And the first Etude is a nice piece which also like other Chopin kind of forshadows the modern smooth jazzy piano harmonies, doesn't it?

When I go to the library tomorrow, I intend to check out at least these two albums:

Carlo Gesualdo: Prince of Madrigalists

Pierre Boulez: Le Marteau sans Maitre (may he rest in peace)

Also, there's this piece. I know that it's not really classical, but something's been bugging me about it. During the first few seconds, a pianist is playing something. I know it sounds familiar, but I can't place the piece, and I can't even definitively place the composer. I'm fairly sure it's a Romantic composer (like Chopin or Liszt), but I can't figure out what it is. Maybe Alex can help.

It sounds painfully familiar. I was first thinking of maybe including Rachmaninov and Tschaikowski on the list of candidates as well, but I couldn't find it so far.
