That was kind of her Opus; she is most famous for that book.

It was made into a movie, I don't know if you saw it, it was very successful.

I never quite reconciled myself with the choice of Tom Cruise as Lestat,
although I suppose I can grudgingly admit that he did a pretty good job.
Yeah, I saw the movie. It didn't make an everlasting impression on me, though. But it was still good, I guess(?).

The book though... Extremely beautiful.

How pleasantly surprised was I to learn later on that she was an atheist... And then immediately find out that she became a reborn christian later in life. WTF.

There's more to that story.

She was raised Catholic.

She became an Atheist.

After many many years, and after the death of her husband,
she publicly announced her return to Christianity,
and even went so far as to describe her years of writing Vampire fiction
as her "years in the darkness" or something.

But then, only a year after publicly announcing her return to Christianity,
she also publicly announced that she was divorcing herself from the organized religion,
even though she still embraced Jesus, I believe.

Her son is openly gay, and she is extremely supportive of him;
I seem to recall her citing something about this weighing on her decision,
about the Church's intolerance for homosexuality, or something.

She said she was going to devote herself to writing about and for Christ,
and did, for awhile,
but then she returned to writing about Vampires, and also werewolves.

So, there you have it.

I'm sure you can read more about it on her website, where she has a blog,
and, at one time, at least, even answered questions posted by the public.

Yeah, I read all that, I just didn't remember it on the spot. Except the part where she "returned to writing about Vampires" and how she described her earlier writings. This connection you're making seems a little flimsy but I'll take your word on it.

But it's not like it's the ultimate requisite for a writer to be an atheist for me to enjoy him. Though I do like to pretend believe that the more intelligent authors I read that are apparently religious are just being dishonest for the public's sake. I imagine in this day and age any public figure from a bigoted religious country must act like a politician where such matters are concerned.

You were clearly saying her writing about vampires relates to her distancing herself from religion.

I re read the Book of Revelation today, I supposed if I dropped some acid it would be probably the best book I have ever read. Since I did not I would give it a rating of 3 out of 5, for the sheer insanity of it.

oh i see.  sorry, I didn't understand.

To clarify a bit:

I recall reading an interview where I believe that she, herself, said something to that effect:
that her years of writing vampire fiction
were her years of walking in the darkness, or similar.

I do remember reading it, because it surprised me, too.

But it isn't a connection that I drew, myself...it was something I read.

I'm sorry, I don't recall the quote, verbatim,

but if I can dig it up, I will post it in this thread.

Just finished reading (listening to) Seveneves by Neal Stephenson.

Primer: One day, there is a little puff of an explosion(?) on the moon, and the moon breaks apart. How the hell does the human race respond?

What a great book, and definitely recommended.

Next up: Stephen Pinker's Better Angels of our Nature.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
