Your dichotomy appears to assume that we are all US Americans...

We all know you are really an American.  Even if you were born in Germany and only moved here to help us with our rocket program to put people on the moon (and to build intercontinental ballistic missiles).

Well... I do have the pledge of allegiance memorized (the non commie post 50s version)  and can sing the star sprangled banner plus harmonies, so I guess that counts.
As for the rocket business, didn't that work out nicely for mostly everyone involved who survived...

In a perfect world, I'd defiantly go with an authority-less bottom up society. I guess the issue is that we don't live in a perfect world, and I can't figure out how anarchy could ever work.

Also, the anarchist community at large has a lot of issues. Lots of anti-intellectualism, as well as some seriously fucked up people. Also a lot of people who haven't given the issue a whole lot of thought. Oh, and from what I've been able to gather, a lot of anarchists are pro alternative medicine. And the whole punk rock purism thing, which excludes all other types of music.

The list continues, but I guess that's not a criticism of anarchy ideologically.

That is hysterical!  Your former "anarchist" associates should look up the word "anarchy" in a dictionary.  It does not mean the same thing as a "clique."  What are they, 14 years old?

They sound like some anti fascist groups I've encountered whose activism consisted of drinking beer, eating pizza and listenening to punk rock

See, you are even more American than I am!

I am a very good activist myself.  Not only do I drink beer, I also drink wine and whisky.  I will keep on drinking until either all of the worlds problems are solved or I die.  In fact, even if all of the world's problems are solved, I will still keep on drinking until I die.  That is how devoted I am.

The only alternatives are establishment loving democrat, establishment loving republican, or philosophical anarchist? That does not sound like a complete list of the possible positions.

Actually, Somalia wasn't the worst actor in those regards, and showed improvement in almost every metric (except the very important one of infant mortality) while it was without a government. I would say that anarchy can be superior to the worst examples of governance, and that is a region where the worst examples of governance are all too plentiful. The new government shows early signs of being better than anarchy, which I hope continues. I know that's a low standard, but I'm leery of getting my hopes up too high.

Great responses, I could have worded the question in a less loaded way I suppose (and avoided the false dichotomy), but meh (I was bored).
