That is hard to answer. It's hard to imagine an alien's perspective of us but I tend to agree with you. I don't think they would have any motivation other than scientific curiosity. And in that case, I don't think there is any possibility we know they are watching unless they wish it.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
