Been there. Done that. The Baghavad Gita, The Quran, The Analects Of Confucius, The Dhammapada, Four Noble Truths, Gospel Of Buddha, Pirqe Aboth, Kojiki, Nihongi, Tao Te Ching, and Chuang Tzu. They don't compare.

Somehow I doubt that, but I suppose it's possible that someone could believe the bible is a special snowflake compared to other books, despite reading through them all.

People, please familiarize yourselves with the rules.  This is the Intro forum, which basically means welcomes are all that are allowed.  OP, I'm sure the membership-at-large would like to know more about your beliefs and why you believe them.  Care to start another thread in an appropriate part of the forum for discussions such as these?

Thank you all.

Don't make me start making reports, here.

Welcome, TS. You're going to get ripped a new anal orifice in this forum but not here!  Big Grin

Good luck! It's good when we all learn from each other.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Welcome!
I have suspicions about your initial claims, but welcome all the same. Smile

I am a non-smoker, and heve always been a non-smoker. I studied Pre-med in College before later changing majors but I did get a healthy interest in Anatomy and disease. So with my studies, I can give many terrific reasons that it is wrong to take up smoking. My arguments against smoking are vastly different than someone's who just thought it was stinky and made them cough. Similarly, as a Former christian, son of a loudmouth argumentative Southern Baptist preacher, and who has been interested in debunking all the lies that he heard all through his childhood by studying theology and ancient archeology, I am sure that I am a much different atheist than the one you claimed to have been.

You sound very secure in your beliefs. Have you ever studied the history of the medical profession in the united states? The battle of the allopathic vs. the imperical or homeopathic medicine? The A.M.A. under the influence of big business and the pharmaceutical industry. It wasn't so long ago that smoking was encouraged by the medical profession, was it? All doctors used to smoke.

You reference a time when very little of the scientific method was in use and superstition and religion were more paramount. Of course pre-modern medicine was primitive and wrong about many things. but then we started using the scientific method and questioned, experimented and observed empirically causing our knowledge to shoot up. New discoveries build upon our previous observations and with each iteration our medical knowledge is fine tuned. We may change our biological models of certain diseases as replacement test results come in, but we will never ever go back to the "SIN" and "Demons" disease model of the bible in my opinion, so yeah, I'm very secure in my beliefs.

As we can't get into such deep discussion here on an introductory thread, point out a discussion thread that you would like to continue on and dig deeper.

I mentioned "sock" earlier because we just had a theist leave that seemed similar to me, but if not, I'm glad for fresh discussions, so welcome.

I'm afraid this guy has already been banned for being a sock, rather than a belt Tongue

He decided to waste our time for a day or so before making his point, which was nothing.
