Vegemite and Marmite

I have never tasted either one of these products and am curious about them. Turns out I can't go to a local grocery and purchase either since I live in the US. So, I mail ordered a jar of each.
I read that it appeals to the taste buds that detect Umami. If you didn't know there are 5 tastes that you detect. Sweetness, sourness, saltiness, bitterness, and umami.
The jars should be here tomorrow so I'll let you know what I think of them. Please feel free to discuss your experience with these products and any favorite recipes you have.

My mother is English and I have Australian relatives. I've tried both of the 'mites' and both times I tried them I felt like I was eating the moldy scrapings of Satan's ballsack.

There are some stores in the U.S. that sell one or the other of those things. Wegman's is a grocery store that sells Marmite, I think.
I have tried Marmite, and I like it. Since trying it, I keep a jar on hand. But I don't eat it that often, as it is very salty.
I remember reading or hearing somewhere that most people prefer Marmite to Vegemite, but that Australians who are used to Vegemite tend to prefer it to Marmite. That makes sense to me, because much of a person's preferences in food is affected by what one is accustomed to eating.

Giant Eagle, a big grocery chain in the mid-Atlantic, sold Marmite when I lived there. My understanding, which may be faulty, is that there's a UK Marmite and an Aussie Marmite...and a Vegemite. I think the stuff I had was UK Marmite, but I couldn't tell you how they differ. I tried it on a whim one day and was addicted. Breakfast every day was toast with butter and the Marmite, and maybe cereal or fruit.
I need to track something like that down here.

My wife (english) eats marmite on toast as well. We mainly use it to make our gravies taste better. It definitely is an acquired taste. I dip just a little bit of pretzel in it...yum!

One of the mistakes people apparently make when trying marmite is they get a knife, stick it straight into the jar and then proceed to just lick the marmite off the knife.
The taste is going to be far too strong if you eat it alone, but I've heard it's nice on toast or with other things.
That said, I still didn't like it.

A lot of times people try things in a bad way, which gives a misleading impression of whatever it is. Imagine how most people would react to Tabasco if they tried it by itself.
My advice is to use it sparingly, at least at first, just the way one would normally start with something like Tabasco, except one will likely want it on different kinds of things.
I can certainly understand not liking Marmite, but I find it interesting and unusual, and I like it occasionally. In fact, this thread is giving me some thoughts about my own jar of Marmite. I may have some in a bit.
