I'm reading that I can't just blindly bring my pH levels up, because my hydrogen levels may be low, but my soil content may be fine with clay and magnesium, or whatever combination of minerals that are able to hold on to nutrients.
I'm thinking I'll have to get a pH test as well as a mineral content analysis. I know I have a shit load of clay a foot down, just from using the auger last fall building the pasture fence, so I'll be curious to see what percentage is in my soil. Probably a good thing to know. Damn, I just wanted to kill some weeds, not learn some shit. 
It wouldn't actually make the garden more acidic..it's extremely difficult to achieve longterm change in soil ph as the ph is a result of a whole host of factors if, left unmolested by yourself, it will trend to regardless. Vinegar will, at very high concentrations, topkill weeds (it'll kill everything thats not a weed even dead-er). Trouble with that is that with no overgrowth to contend with the weeds will run rampant. Basically killing off their competition. If you want to effectively use vingar (or any topkiller) you have to run the knifes edge. You have to let the weed go to seed, dump tons of resources into the seed..then topkill the seed before it germinates. That -could- disrupt local spread for a single year. The horsetail will come back though..rhizomes - up to 20 feet deep...I shit you not. Even scraping the bed might not work.

Yeah, I was reading about the rhizomes. That's pretty fucked. So, my lawn is clear if this rush; is that due to being out competed like you're saying? If so, I'm wondering if scrapping the garden and making it all lawn would work to kill it. Then, start a new garden next year with prevention in mind. That is, if the rhizomes aren't just laying dormant.

Could be a number of things. Some People™ used to plant them as ornamentals, your house is a windbreak, the lawn has adequate topcover....you mow it alot..etc. You sure your yard is clear....? If it is, it's likely an issue of establishment rather than competition...and don't expect it to be clear forever. The stuff is cancer...seriously nasty.
(all that said..it doesn't really -do- anything that would concern you. Your grass looks fine, so, obviously it's a variety that can coexist...not all are so lucky..thats the only real problem with horsetail, it acts as a germination inhibitor for grasses)

Oh, that's true. Could be I don't see it because it gets mowed. It's a nice soft lawn though, you'd think it'd kinda hurt to walk on the shoots, but maybe they haven't reached that point before getting mowed. Yeah, I'll have to check. Fuck me, man, this shit is insidious.
I saw that people pot it for ornamental use. I can see that; it's kind of pretty. I saw there was some medicinal and sanding/polishing uses for it, too. Maybe I'll just put a sign out front and call myself a farmer. Like you said, this stuff's better at it than I.

I've got a friend who would advise covering everything in layers of cardboard or newspaper with new dirt added on top.twenty or thirty years ought to do it.
