My Co-Boss is Atheist
#11
RE: My Co-Boss is Atheist
I've met someone who preaches that she's an atheist only because she read a christian bible once and declared it ridiculous. That's not atheism, it's just declaring one religion false....As for this guy, that's not a reason for atheism. There is some logic in his statement I suppose, but it's not something a full-fledged atheist would say in defence for their atheism (there is obviously much more to it than that). If so, then I would have become an atheist at age 7 after what happened to my grandmother.

dude, that's atheism. his conclusion is entirely logical. they may not have a strong foundation for their atheism, but they are still atheists.

"If so, then I would have become an atheist at age 7 after what happened to my grandmother."

are you serious dude? now i have to try explaining why the quoted is unreasonable... obviously not everyone is going to come to the conclusion that certain deities don't exist if not any at all because of the problem of evil, especially not a 7 year old that doesn't understand what is meant by problem of evil and is probably still being told that Christmas is when Santa comes down the chimney to put presents under the tree. There is plenty logic in becoming an atheist after reading the Bible or experiencing a hardship.

logic for the girl:
the Bible is believed by many
the Bible is ridiculous in my opinion
many people believe in something ridiculous they call religion
many people are capable of believing in something ridiculous.
how can any other religion be any better?

probably not as clear cut as "all violets are red. you are a violet thus you are red." but its' there.

logic for my coboss:

God is said to be loving
My wife died a horrible death
if a loving god exists, then how could he let my wife die that way?
maybe no loving god exists.
i already thought every other religion was dumb
maybe no gods exist at all.

I suppose what I meant was that there is more to atheism (like defeating the first cause argument easily and with your chin in the air). You can still be a deist after things like that happen. It's not like as soon as you turn from christianity the only road left is atheism. I hope you see what I mean now. Because he could have become a deist after such a tragedy. I know what it's like because I was a deist for a long while.

She had already rejected all of the other gods, she just had one more to go.

Ragging on God is more like believing than not IMO.

This can at times be true...

But usually me chiding people for believing in unicorns is because I don't believe in them (or rather, their existence beyond a concept) Smile

That's chiding people tho' not deities... and if you were to blame a unicorn then I'd probably credit your sarcasm.

True... then wouldn't most of this 'ragging on God' be sarcastic in nature? Thinking

I tell you though... bananas are kleptomaniacs the lot of them. I am going to note this in my religious views now, because it is a whim and I am whimsical Smile

Sometimes sarcastic yes, but not if you're serious... I'd guess this geezer wasn't jesting about his missus.
