Limit it to Burton era Metallica and you've got a deal. I play bass and love Jason Newsted, but I think his creative contribution was limited.

Everybody's a bit different and the lines are often blurred. I wouldn't consider Van Halen metal. I consider them hard rock along with Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Guns N' Roses.

No doubt, good point. But having settled in California after living in Iran, VH, and the hair-metal that they inspired, was definitely metal to us then. Now, I don't think of hair-metal as metal nowadays, but VH's first four albums to my ears are still in there.

Soundgarden certainly wasn't pure metal, but when I hear shit like "Jesus Christ Pose" or "Limo Wreck" I hear metal. One thing I love about that band is how they fused American metal and South Asian musical sensibilities into coherent songs. Well that, and Cornell's lyrical sensibility.

I also can't think 'heavy metal' without upping the irons.

Yeah, Maiden was the shit, and Testament too. My first garage band covered "Run to the Hills", and were working on "The Trooper" when real life took and I quit to take a paying job.

Yeah, I think thrash lovers got suspicious at the Black album (which I actually love), and the rest bailed at Load.  But actually, their most recent albums are pretty fucking awesome again, imo.  I find Death Magnetic to be kind of halfway between Kill 'Em All and the Black Album.  The first song, "This is your Life" really does remind me of those earlier, kick-ass albums. The only downside is that they are such a tight band now that the music sounds a little boxed; that out-of-control feel of Kill 'Em All had something much more raw.

lol except he said "Megadeth" not "Maiden." I have to say though that "Run to the Hills" is one of the greatest songs of that era. It's forever on my exercise playlist, especially when I'm running mountain trails.

"Up the Irons" is a motto any Iron Maiden fan recognizes.
