"Soul" is an antiquated superstitious gap answer invented by humans who refuse to accept their finite existence

First catch your human. Remove the life and begin dissecting. Drain the blood and other fluids, remove the internal organs and skeleton. Keep dissecting until you have discarded all the organic material. Whatever remains, that's the soul.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Thanks - can I have that in writing?

There's a machine in Star Trek called the transporter that pulls you apart and puts you back together, exactly the same, in a different location.
I don't believe in this thing called the soul, so I don't understand what makes me so afraid that, if these things were invented, I would never travel in one.
Perhaps some residue of my former x-tian life many years ago.

You would no longer actually be you, but you would not know the difference. Now if it also made a copy, which you is you?
You make people miserable and there's nothing they can do about it, just like god.

I could only make a copy that I was intending to keep.
Otherwise, on it's birth it would immediately try to kill me. :-)
In Star Trek you are destroyed when you travel.
You don't come back.
But without a soul, there's no difference, so you never really died, you were just transported.
See what I'm getting at? :-)

I think you're reading too much into it, though you're undoubtedly not the first; I wouldn't be surprised if it's come up in one of the spin-off variants or something. The original, basic idea is that a person is converted into energy, which is then beamed to a location and converted back to matter. It's why they couldn't transport through shields, designed to repel energy beams. You don't get destroyed and then become an exact copy.
