Personally I'd rather be done in than spend the rest of my life in jail. I've always felt that way.
The death penalty is difficult. My opinion of it has changed somewhat recently. I was pro, but now I'm leaning a bit towards against. It's not a simple matter of kill or not kill, there are many more factors involved. I'm pretty ignorant of it all, but I'm aware it's not an issue in isolation.
Of course I'd prefer a society where there is no death penalty, and no knock-on bad effects, ideally with the inmates doing something productive instead while in jail.

I'd chose life in jail, if I can have a minimum of a choice of books and something to write. Maybe a piano
Also, I can always hope for the apocalypse.

Mind = Blown. Some people need to be removed from society, and some people believe life imprisonment is worse than a quick death.
It's a highly debatable subject, and generally imprisoning people is actually less expensive than executing them because of the appeals process. However, unless you keep a prisoner chained up in isolation the whole time, which would be considered a form of torture, they're still a threat to those around them.
I believe in the most extreme circumstances, people should be put to death. Some crimes elicit anger in such a way that removing them from the face of the earth seems quite reasonable. Not just merely killing someone, but doing it horribly and dragging it out.
I'm all for rehabilitation, but that's not going to work for everyone. Death should be a last resort, but it should remain on the table.

Nothing done out of anger is reasonable. Anger is an emotion and it's one of the strongest ones at overriding logic and rational thought.

That's why the word seems is in there. Anger is a stage of grief, and when you find out something horrible happens, it can make you angry even if it doesn't effect you or your loved ones directly. Anger is a negative emotion, but it is also a sign of empathy for the victim.

I think the biggest problem with the death penalty is that too many mistakes are made in the criminal justice system. If a mistake is discovered and the person is in prison, the person can be set free. If they were executed, then even partial restitution is impossible.
Basically, with the death penalty, innocent people will be killed by the state, because there will always be mistakes made. How do you feel about supporting a policy which guarantees that the state will kill innocent people?
In the U.S., it is also unfairly and inconsistently imposed, and that is another reason to be against it here, at least as presently practiced.
