Don't forget that Pat is from the generation where a whooping was the answer to a lot of problems, not just religion. Speaking from experience.
Why would you want a child to associate pain and humiliation with science? I say let them use the their holy book, a cross, crescent moon, a iron rod (thinking of moron's), a big ass dreidel.
