Atheist belief is not a passion for me, just a way of life. I let a lot more other things get me worked up.

Hello mh.brewer, I hope my statement didn't make you think of my atheism as a passion,  I am passionate about it when in conversation.  I would agree that I shouldn't let other peoples theism work me up.

No worries. You might need some of that passion here.

I am actually surprised by the involvement of theists in here

I would consider myself "passionate" about my atheism, and yet most people know me as a really nice guy unless they choose to provoke me on the subject (generally by promoting false statements about science or about atheists).

For most people here, atheism isn't anything but a lack of belief in gods, and I understand where they're coming from, but I happen to be one of the rare ones who think that, especially for those of us who live in heavily-religious areas and/or came to our atheism out of an upbringing of religious indoctrination, it is incumbent on those of us who managed to free our minds to try to make the world better by engaging those who would push religions which tell humanity to turn off their brains and "just believe".

I'm sorry for what happened on your date. Ironically, one of the reasons I feel so passionate about my lack of faith and how it informs my worldview is that our culture heaps praise on the passionate religionist, yet scorns anyone who speaks of their nonbelief with even half as much passion. They threaten us with eternal firey torture for disobedience to an invisible commander's laws, and everyone's okay with that, but the moment I say that it is wrong to try to dominate our society with their mythologies, it's "why are you so angry?!"

I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. With my shared feelings on your rare thinking, I approached a statement made by the gentleman that his morals come from religion, and thats why he doesn't jump across the table to kill me.  I rebuked, well then where do the morals of animals in the wild who have a social hierarchy function and aren't killing themselves.  I wanted to get him to think of the world in a different way and how morals are not established by religion alone.

In regards to the world-view it is nearly ubiquitous in how you describe the disdain they have towards us.  When we let those religious fanatics control the policies and laws of the land thats what makes me angry Angry   just as it does you.  It is a pleasure to meet you.

Hello, Banks.

I for one have no patience with this "be kind to muslims because they'll get upset" horseshit.  Still "liberal" muslims are such a rarity that they should be nurtured a bit.

I personally don't really have a passion for atheism. I have a lot of passion but atheism on its own can be rather boring.
Anywho, I'm really glad to meet you, welcome aboard.

You're going to see that argument a whole lot, here, so you'll have plenty of chances to rebuke it. Smile

Ironically, Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller) addressed that argument exactly:

"The question I get asked by religious people all the time is, without God, what’s to stop me from raping all I want? And my answer is: I do rape all I want. And the amount I want is zero. And I do murder all I want, and the amount I want is zero. The fact that these people think that if they didn’t have this person watching over them that they would go on killing, raping rampages is the most self-damning thing I can imagine. I don't want to do that. Right now, without any god, I don't want to jump across this table and strangle you. I have no desire to strangle you. I have no desire to flip you over and rape you."

Hello Banks, glad you joined up!

I too am very passionate about atheism, and having no one much to talk about it this is a great outlet for me too. My wife is an atheist but is sick of hearing about it!

One of the big reasons I became vocal is the harm religion causes, such as in politics like you say.

I think you'll fit in well here!

That's a great quote RS. Some theists are basically saying they are psychopaths on an invisible leash. I don't believe they really are, but they've been brow beaten into believing it about themselves. It's really sad.
