So, any other stories that restore your faith in humanity (or at least make you think that wiping it out may be premature)?

No.  I figure any such things are distractions that may lull one into a false sense of people not being bad.  Wiping it out is not premature.  It is past due.

I feel better after drinking, too.

Not quite what I meant, yeah. Thanks though.

People just annoy me.

There's many small gestures people can do in public on occasion.

The ones that make me the happiest are when children smile and wave to me. Of course, I smile and wave back at them. Sometimes we exchange goofy faces. I like making kids laugh.

I used to check in on an elderly couple I knew, and they had a home health worker that came in a few times a week to provide care. Our interactions were polite and courteous when our visits overlapped, but our conversations revolved around the couple...they never became personal on any level.

During this period, I began a messy divorce and found out my mother had stage 4 cancer within the space of a couple of days. Several months later the emotional upheaval, worrying about my children, caring for my parents, financial stress, second job, lack of sleep, and living with constant dread began taking it's toll. I was horrendously depressed and became sick.

It must have showed, because one day this woman just walked up to me for no reason and hugged the hell out of me. Out of nowhere. I was very embarrassed, but I totally smiled and pretended to have no idea why she would think I needed such a thing. "That was so nice of you.... but nothing's wrong! Really. I'm fine. Ha ha!"

Happened a long time ago, but it reminded me that some people are paying attention...and they do care.

Neighbor lady used to send down a plate of home made cookies from time to time.

I dropped a subtle hint or 2, and she gave me the recipe.

I make quite a few of those cookies now that she has passed, and I enjoy remembering her when I do.

It also turns out, I found a prototype recipe for those cookies from her mom in my mom's recipe file when I was going through it. I gave the handwritten recipe card back to the family. They were amazed to see it, and got a kick out of the differences in the recipes.

The old recipe had 2 forms of leavening (a change I incorporated in the cookies I make since they turn out thicker and chewier) a different form of shortening (that's since it is such an old recipe), and NUTS !!!

Everyone agrees, the cookies don't need NUTS !!!
