That's why it's called fiction and not a documentary. Some of the better episodes have the supernatural explanation as not necessarily being the 'correct' one. It's what we see on the screen, and what Mulder (typically) sees, but there's an ambiguity over whether it's only what he wants to see. Even the alien conspiracy stuff hinges on disinformation and what the conspirators want to feed him.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Yeah, but Scully was never explicitly shown to be right, and Mulder's line of thinking was often shown to be correct. It was the kind of thing that I'm sure conspiracy theroists couldn't helped but getting an erection to while watching. It celebrated poor critical thinking for the most part, and as vorlon pointed out, too many people can't discern fiction from reality.
But that's not the only reason I didn't really care for it. I can't really get into a fictional television series like that. I feel like the characters and premises end up getting stetched thin, and the writers are forced to go to ridiculous lengths to keep the show fresh.

I take your point, but it's hardly the fault of the series if people take it seriously. There's a radio soap opera called The Archers that's been going since about 1950, which regularly gets fan mail from people who believe it's real. Hell, you don't need to look any further than the bible for that.
The main reason that supernatural things were depicted as real is because it's set in a reality where supernatural things are real. Imagine how boring Star Wars would be if it was about a kid from the Bronx with a vivid imagination for spaceships and robots.

True, and I don't really hold it against the creators that people take it seriously. The show just wasn't for me.

I was just thinking about the opposite of the X-files... That would have to be scooby doo! In scooby's world, it's always a ghost until they unmask the faker and prove that nothing supernatural was going on. Velma is the skeptic and she's always right.

I have seen all nine seasons, and both movies, and I am eagerly waiting for the new special six episode return in January.
And I thought the show was great up until around the time that Mulder bowed out of the show for a few seasons. It just was not the same without him.

Not a problem at all. It wouldn't do for everyone to be alike. I don't see the appeal of Big Brother and similar, for instance.

Robert Patrick was an interesting choice, I thought. But yeah, the dynamics had changed and it lost something in the mix.

I loved that show as a boy ... I wonder why, now. Perhaps it appealed to the nascent skeptic in me?
