It seems that some people are naturally more sceptical than others. And the more sceptical you are, the more chance there is that external arguments and your own research are going to make an impact on your beliefs.

I know it's a small sample, but almost every atheist on this site that broke free of religion seems to be very much of the sceptical kind. This trend seems to extend to most of the online media I have watched too.

Some people are, I think, naturally sceptical but need a little training in formal logic to help them see through religious bullshit. Once they talk to people well versed in logic who can point out their errors in thinking, they will then recognise them as errors. Whereas the non sceptic will just ignore this and declare themselves correct regardless.

This is all a very vague generalisation of course.
