Can you teach yourself?
November 26, 2015 at 5:06 am
Here's my question:
Can you teach yourself things, without interacting with anything physically, or reading something, etc.
What I mean is, is it possible to teach yourself things, about something not concerning you as a person, just by thinking about it?
My personal opinion:
I feel like at first I thought this was a no brainer, because asking questions for the most part, can help you reach a conclusion, all done in your mind. Then I realized, it may be a lack of vocabulary, but I have trouble explaining how someone can gain new information without experiencing, seeing, feeling, reading, hearing, anything new.
Thoughts?
Which is better:
To die with ignorance, or to live with intelligence?
Truth doesn't accommodate to personal opinions.
The choice is yours.

The more questions you ask, the more you realize that disagreement is inevitable, and communication of this disagreement, irrelevant.

I'd say yes, you can come to new realisations and conclusions by thinking about what you already know. You can get more information out of information you already have.
I call this "The Penny Dropping".
If you're talking about totally unrelated information that cannot possibly be concluded from what you already know, then no. You can only form hypotheses. Of course, it may be possible to conclude things from what we know, but we lack the cognitive functions necessary to draw such conclusions.

I have thought physics things through without external help, and I regularly rehearse talks in my head, going through points I want to make and how to word them...
But in both cases, I always had a foundation of some sort on which to build.

It seems that one thing which cannot be self-taught is how to spell 'believe'.
Seriously, I agree with Alex. Without foundational education, you cannot 'teach' yourself anything at all. If you could, then infants would learn to speak and to solve quadratic equations by simply mulling things over.

Yes. For example - masturbation.

If your referring to "thinking things through" or "finally getting it" then, yes that's possible; taking the information that's available to you and processing it through logic, deduction, etc., and coming to a proper conclusion.
That becomes less likely to happen as the subject becomes more complicated, without being able to access information at some point. The conclusions arrived at are more likely to be guesses. Possibly good or educated guesses, but still guesses.
Unless of course, a person's been experimenting with neurological drugs that significantly increase cognitive ability and function, after synthesizing them in his/her basement lab. That could be a game-changer.
