RE: Political Correctness
I don't know about all that you wrote in your first post, but political correctness can lick on my taint.

His point -- that language is watered down to protect fragile sensibilities -- seems very apt for this thread, because while you're right that much of it is about marketing, much of it (his best example, imo: cripple > handicapped > differently-abled > "handicapable", which thankfully had a short shelf life) is exactly what is happened when PC establishes its language police (in a manner of speaking).

I'm warning you right now anyone that calls me a cripple is getting 30 whacks with my cane.

I agree that clouding terms in euphemisms is bullshit and agree with his statement that words are just words and it's the context in which they are used that make you an asshole or not; my contention is that some of the terms he listed have WAY more to do with marketing than with being PC.

Had he used the used car example in particular with regards to "used car salesmen" not just "used cars" ** and called them "previously owned vehicle acquisition facilitators" THAT would be bullshit to me because it would be clouding a clear term for a person's job with euphemistic craptrap because "used car salesman" has become something of a pejorative.

** I've never in my life heard the term "previously owned vehicle" used anywhere except in the context of someone trying to sell a used car. My parents bought a used Honda a few years ago and they never ever refer to it as their "previously owned" Honda.

That is what bothered me about that list. There were some terms he could have left out of that list and, I think, driven home his point about PC bullshit without appealing to terms that are clearly more about marketing than being PC.

I wouldn't call anyone a cripple myself. Being against PC doesn't mean being inconsiderate of another's feelings. Smile

I know you're being somewhat tongue in cheek here, but will use it as an example of how decades of PC bullshit affects language. I could never consider calling a blind person crippled, only in PC land could this even possibly make sense. Crippled refers to a condition that affects motor function.

Now along comes 'handicapped' as an a softer less descriptive description that subsumes any number of conditions. After awhile, people will then work in reverse and change the meanings of words like 'crippled' to be synonymous with handicapped. It's this unnecessary sanitizing of language that makes PC so unpalatable.

RE: Political Correctness
How about using negative words like "retarded?" I'm perfectly comfortable using this word when I think someone/something is stupid, exactly because a retarded person is stupid. But then I have to listen to the outrage from my aunts, and how her special-needs students are "differently abled" and all that. Fine, let them help my daughter with her calculus homework, then. I don't like it when the simple reality of the human condition, and the words about it, take a backseat to a kind of condescending "support."

Actually handicap is considered rude as well. It's not a slur the same way cripple is, but I'd still give you a nasty look.
