It's good to see the Church is still strong in Ireland, and it remains the Isle of "saints and scholars"

What's up with Ireland?

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/22/world/...chool.html Quote:DUBLIN — The Roman Catholic Church has lost the battles over divorce, contraception and gay marriage in Ireland. But it still wields what some parents call the “baptism barrier”: influencing admission to public schools. Judging by their track record it looks like they are going to go 0 for 4. Good to see the church take it up the ass..... although the pervs probably like it. Plus the rcc and its proxies are no longer our only source of information. We're looking out into the world these days and have abandoned the narrow catholic parochialism. Also the preoccupation with religious mores in Ireland was largely a result of the famine. Before it, while the country was mostly catholic, the church had nowhere near the amount of power it had from 1850 to 1990.

Education is by far the most conservative department in the state, no wonder when you spend eight years in religious primary school, 6 in religious secondary school, and 4 in religious university (all teacher training colleges in Ireland are run by religious orders). Primary schools have to spend half an hour a day on religious instruction, plus the month each in 94% os schools for communion and confirmation, thats nearly two whole years learning about Jebus. Recently a secular group were denied the right to patron a state funded school in Cork. If they were successful they would have been the first state school (outside of third level) without a religious ethos to inform every decision.

I agree rrc doesn't have much of a future in schools considering this is the technological age kids can just google find out what their being taught is bs. As far as the secular group being denied i am not surprised that happen the church is still trying to hold what little power they have still.

There's been several movies, you could watch, but to start with: "Song for a Raggy Boy" "The Magdalene Sisters" there's more books than I can count; start with "Trinity" by Leon Uris.
