I've no idea, I'm a complete retard. I just wondered what methodology would be remotely analagous so that the LIGO team can distinguish a wave generated by the motion of an unseen truck, and waves from far-off cosmological events. They probably can't know where and when all the trucks and animals are moving, so there must be some means of determining the proximity and direction of every wave source I figured if I have this question than others would, if LIGO really is that powerful. Or do I have something confused?

I don't know what all the techniques are tbh. Having two detectors thousands of miles apart probably plays a key role. Also, if you look at the signal I posted earlier, it has a quite typical shape

I understand that one way in which they distinguish between local events and extragalactic ones is by having two detectors placed at a considerable distance one from another. Gravitational waves travel way faster than anything else that could produce those kinds of vibrations in those two detectors within such a restricted time frame.
Also Alex alluded earlier to the fact that they've already done this in a simulation and the real thing resembles it too much to be a coincidence.
Anything else involves highly technical stuff that you couldn't understand as easily at a lay person level, I imagine.
What people like you and me need to know is that the probability that they're right is almost 100% in this case - if I remember it correctly. Why that is, is way too complicated to explain in its entirety beyond what you read on the internet about it. You would have to actually achieve that level of expertise in that particular domain to fully understand it.

Ahhh, that's the part I missed, or it didn't filter through because I needed it spelled out - they work in concert and do a sort of triangulation!
Thanks!

And something earthbound that affects one detector isn't going to noodge the other one. And by minute differences in timing from nearly simultaneous detections of identical disturbances they can determine direction.

. . . and the identical waveforms seen on both LIGOs are self confirming

Heard on the abc this morning that a meteor the size of an 11 storey building is missing earth but is roughly whizzing past where some of our satellites are.

Latest data seem to cast doubt on the notion that the phenomenon causing the gravity wave observation was in fact an ordinary pair of run of the mill stellar sized blackholes coalescing. When such objects merge, there should be no electromagnetic signature.
