Since the time I was a small child he raised me to be able to live and survive in a world where he no longer exists. It’s odd that I now live in that world. Time keeps marching inexorably forward. The future is never real to us until it becomes the present.
He was a mental health counselor who would have loved Stimbo’s joke. “I told my psychiatrist I’ve been hearing voices in my head. He told me I don’t have a psychiatrist.”
As a practicing professional he never let anyone call him a psychiatrist. “I’m a counselor.” But after retirement he would say he went into psychiatry because he couldn’t afford a psychiatrist.
I wrote these poems for my father.
