The Steven Pinker research Alex K referenced was mostly talked about in the book of his The Stuff Of Thought that I read, and from the chapter about bad language if I remember correctly the effect is indeed because the words are considered "bad" or taboo.

@Benny, I think it's safe for me to speak for Hammy in saying that he doesn't hate you and him calling you a cunt or a cuntface or any other names should not be taken as any more harmful than saying jerk or bootyhead as that was how they were likely intended.
