Do regular looking people not have sex lives? Also like I said, those that break the mould are the really popular shows anyway. So I think that idea is an obsolete one anyway.

Of COURSE regular-looking people have sex lives. Even uggos like Yours Truly get our share. But you're expecting fantasy (television) to reflect reality (reality), and it doesn't work that way. Television programmes like the ones you're bitching about are aired for one reason and one reason only - to make money. They are manifestly not showcases for brilliant writing and acting, they're money machines. And the reason that pretty people are on them is because most people in RL like looking at pretty people. Not saying it's fair, or right, or even sensible, but it happens to be a brute fact.

If 'sex sells' was an obsolete idea, Steve Buscemi would be getting more roles and bigger paydays than Brad Pitt.

I don't know. I think you are mixing up what some Hollywood executives think with what actually is. The most popular TV shows just don't play out the theory that you need a bunch of unrealistically good looking people on it. Most popular Drama in the last 10 years is Breaking Bad, which has a mix. The most popular Comedy is the Big Bang Theory, which has a mix of good looking and regular looking people. The most popular show right now is House of Cards, which I'm not familar with, but looks like fairly normal looking people. So why are so many people not catching on?

House of Cards and Breaking Bad are/were exceptionally well-written and well-acted programs; thus they are well-received.
Most television shows, however, are pure garbage and shit. They require "something shiny" to hold viewers' interest.

Such as eye candy.

Not to mention that the magic of make-up and stylists, makes "good looking" folks essentially a dime dozen.
It's just a easy/cheap draw in lieu of procuring actual talent, is all.

I'm with you 100% there. On a related note, I've stopped watching TV and almost entirely stopped watching movies (3 in the past 12 months)

I find it really pisses me off with the so-called "news," Capn.  But I could not agree more.  TV may be the ruination of Western Civilization.

Yeah, the news is the other thing. I can't even watch the news on TV without my neck veins almost exploding in frustration and anger. Hence I don't watch much news.

I probably should explain that I watch almost nothing on tv other than news or now, pseudo-news shows.  The "shows" are deplorable and so ridden with advertising that I simply cannot stand them.

Heh. A super good looking person complaining about good looking people on TV.

But I getchu. I can't stand watching Kevin Costner be his handsome self. I can't stand watching Halle Berry be her beautiful self. Ugh.

I lie. I love it. But I get you, dude. I do.

One TV show in particular where I think this is an issue is "Lost"

I loved that TV show but next time you're on any type of public transportation, plane, train, bus, or anything like that, look around and see if the general population looks anything like the cast of lost.

If you just type in "lost cast" into google there's

Kate Austen - 10 out of 10

James Sawyer Ford - 10 out of 10

Jack Sheppard - 10 out of 10

Hurley - admittedly no where near a 10 out of 10 but possibly could be if he lost a lot of weight.

Boon_ 10 out of 10

Claire Littleton - 10 out of 10

Daniel Dae Kim -  10 out of 10

John Lock - not 10 out of 10 but probably not bad lookin for an old man.

Sayid Jarrah - 10 out of 10

Charlie - Probably at least 8 out of 10

Sun Kwon - 10 out of 10

Micheal - probably 8 out of 10

Rose and her husband, admittedly no where near 10 out of 10 just due to age.

I think that has to be above average for any random plane journey, but I don't know.  Plus I think Claire (Emilie De Ravin) deserves an 11 out of 10 because that kind of beauty is just ridiculous. The only downside being a severe lack of any curvy girls, I think Hurley (the fat man) has the biggest tits of all of them in the original plane crash cast.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.
