We're members, that's who we are; surely on a forum so wholeheartedly set against censorship should permit dissent, right? Well, formal staff action is not the only way to stifle dissent. Allowing a piñata party to continue when you have in that same thread a couple of mods complaining about how the thread had legs was odd, but it had the unintended effect of telling the membership, "It's okay, pile on," I think.
I used to moderate at TAF, and a big mistake we made there was allowing that sort of behavior, because it chased away new membership, which is of course the lifeblood of any forum. Between that and an owner who screwed everyone under, we didn't survive. I don't think it's nearly so bad here -- for one thing, I think Tibs as an owner is head and shoulders above Wayne at TAF; for another, the beatdowns don't happen so often here. But I see it as a little troubling in a forum dedicated to serving heterodoxy.
