I agree, I don't think Trump has much of a grasp on much of anything really, except how to make money and be on TV. Him and this Khan guy is another non-issue for me though. Much a-do about nothing. If you read Trump's actual tweets and interview about him, 'attack' or 'insult' is a pretty big overstatement. Especially considering that Khan called Donald Trump a black soul and all Trump said was his wife wasn't allowed to speak. It would have be smarter to say nothing, but the whole thing is another total non-issue.
Well, as a veteran myself who buried a comrade, it strikes me as a shitty thing ... not that I was going to vote Trump anyway. Guy who's put some money on the line vs guy who put his ass on the line and lost it?
I know who I go with.

Looks like you needn't worry about Drumpf doing the right thing. As always, he doubles-down on stupidity.

Quote:Trump campaign asks Capitol Hill for backing in Khan controversy
Quote:U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign appealed to Capitol Hill for support on Monday as his attacks on the Muslim parents of a decorated U.S. soldier killed in Iraq drew sharp rebukes from fellow party members.
Quote:Rob Wasinger, a onetime congressional candidate who has been working for the Trump camp on congressional outreach, sent an email to senior Senate aides saying, “We want to get several member statements out today on this, and would really appreciate your help.”
A similar appeal was made to Republicans in the House of Representatives, according to a senior aide.
Attached to the appeal were talking points lawmakers could use to try to tamp down the controversy growing since last week’s appearance at the Democratic convention by the Khans, the parents of U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed by a bomb in Iraq 12 years ago.
So far, they seem to be saying "go fuck yourself."

The real surprise is why no one on Trump's team said, "Sir, under no circumstances should you use his death as a bludgeon."
I'll have to talk to other vets before I can get any sort of pulse on veteran attitudes but I'd.certainly like to hear from the other veterans on the board.
Myself, I find it disgusting. Of course I was not going to vote Trump anyway, so I could well be biased ... but I think even if he were my candidate, I'd still find this angle of attack disgusting.
I'm a vet. I believe gold star families should be off limits to political insult from any side. If they want to come forward to speak on a political issue, that's fine. What they say can be criticized. But on a personal level, they should get a pass from being blasted by politicians in public.
I'm not saying this is a rational position, it is almost entirely based on my feelings and the reason part is hard to articulate. It provokes an instant gut reaction in me. I think a lot of vets feel the same way.
I feel you, brotha. It's not something amenable to logcial discourse, is it? It just stirs my disgust and contempt, and at that point my forebrain does not have as much voice in my outlook.

I would hardly say Trump 'Blasted him' I haven't gone over every tweet with a fine tooth comb, so I could be wrong and news reports really aren't very specific on what exactly what so insulting. I think this was probably a bait on the part of the DNC, get a muslim who's son died, have him insult Trump fully and try to provoke a response. No matter what the response was (it seemed to be pretty mild for Trump) crucify him in the press. We really just shouldn't care about this kind of stuff.
If collectively we cared less about non-issues like this, we'd never get a candidate like Trump to start with.
I'm pretty sure the insult was given by promulgating the stereotype that the wife was not allowed to speak.

Good for them. There's nothing wrong with criticizing veterans, but there's something very fucked-up about spitting on the grave of a guy who died in service to his country, his oath, and his company by trafficking in stereotypes about his family.
Here's the Wiki on Captain Humayun Khan:
Quote:Khan was born in the United Arab Emirates to Khizr and Ghazala Khan from the Pakhtunkhwa region in Pakistan located along the Durand Line. The Khan family moved to the United States when Humayun was two years old, and he was raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. Humayun Khan was a Muslim. As a young child, Khan read extensively about Thomas Jefferson. In high school, he taught disabled children swimming. Khan graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1996, and the University of Virginia (U.Va.) in 2000. At U.Va., Khan joined the university's Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Khan joined the United States Army and had planned on becoming a military lawyer. In the Army, Khan achieved the rank of captain.
In 2004, Khan was assigned to the Headquarters Company of the 201st Forward Support Battalion, 1st Infantry Division in Vilseck, Germany. Three to four months into his tour of duty in Iraq, on June 8 near Baqubah, Khan was inspecting a guard post when a suspicious taxicab began approaching too quickly. Ordering his subordinates away from the vehicle, Khan ran forward 10–15 steps and was killed by a suicide car bomb fitted with an improvised explosive device. The car detonated before it could reach the gates or the nearby mess hall where hundreds of soldiers were eating breakfast. The blast also killed the two occupants of the vehicle and two Iraqi bystanders. On June 15, Khan was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Captain Khan was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his actions that day.

Trump suggested the man wouldn't allow his wife to speak. An aide has suggested that his son was secretly a terrorist and that American lives may have been saved because he was killed before he could carry out his nefarious plot. Maybe my threshold for what should be considered 'blasting' is lower than yours.

Didn't someone affiliated with Trump accuse the son/father of being allied with the Muslim Brotherhood as well?
In every country and every age, the priest had been hostile to Liberty.

Looks like Trump ran into an open knife. Pissing on the vets during your campaign doesn't seem to be a good idea.
